Sergeant Bowen began his tour of duty with the Fernandina Beach Police Department on February 1, 1999. Sergeant Bowen served as a Patrol Officer for 1 year, and was selected to become a member of the Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) where he served as a Detective as well as the Acting Supervisor of the Team. Sergeant Bowen also served as a member of the Department’s Special Response Team (SRT) and a member of the Drug Eradication and Enforcement Task Force (DEET), which was a joint drug operation with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department through a grant provided by the Department of Community Affairs, Bureau of Public Safety Management. In January of 2004, Sergeant Bowen was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Task Force. Matt’s Task Force responsibilities have extended to other jurisdictions, and even other states. His Task Force Unit has been responsible for disrupting and taking down methamphetamine and marijuana organizations during several operations, and these operations have brought in monetary funds into the Police Department’s Federal Forfeiture Fund. Sergeant Bowen was promoted to the rank of Police Sergeant on December 17, 2006. He is still presently working as a member of the DEA Task Force. Sergeant Bowen was born in Jacksonville, Florida and resided there until he began his employment with the Fernandina Beach Police Department. Sergeant Bowen graduated from high school in 1989 and enrolled in the Florida Community College of Jacksonville where he began general coursework. Sergeant Bowen’s interest turned towards Criminal Justice, and he received his law enforcement certification from the Northeast Florida Criminal Justice Training Center. Matt has been continuing his college studies and is pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree. Matt was the Fernandina Beach Police Department’s 2001 Officer of the Year.
