Junior Lifeguard Programs

If you have a desire to become a lifeguard, either at a public swimming pool or a beach, why not get some early "field experience" with our summer Junior Lifeguard Programs? These are introductory programs that teach skills such as personal water safety, basic rescue techniques, ocean aquatic safety techniques, and others. Both the Introductory Jr. Lifeguard Exploration Program and Ocean Beach Jr. Lifeguard Program are administered through the Parks & Recreation Department.   Both programs are offered during the summer only (May - August).

Introductory Junior Lifeguard Exploration Program (ages 9-13)
  • Introduction to personal water safety skills and basic rescue techniques
  • Exploration of lifeguarding in a variety of aquatic environments: pool; beach; water park; river
  • Fitness requirements, water quality, maintenance duties, professionalism, public relations, sun safety, and ecology will be discussed and practiced.
  • Both the Atlantic and MLK, Jr. Pools will be used.
  • Pre-requisites: 1) Swim 25 yards (1 full pool length) continuously. 2) Tread water for 2 minutes.

Ocean Beach Junior Lifeguard Program (ages 10-15)
  • Ocean aquatic safety techniques
  • CPR instruction
  • Beach ecology education
  • Emphasis on physical fitness and personal safety
  • Sun protection
  • Team building environment
  • Mentoring by Ocean Rescue professionals
  • This program is primarily held at Main Beach in an ocean environment.
  • Pre-requisites: 1) Swim 50 yards (2 pool lengths) using front crawl and/or breaststroke. 2) Swim 10 yards underwater. 3) Tread water for 3 minutes.

Either program: $150 City residents; $187 Non-City

Registration begins April 25th for City residents only; May 2nd for Non-City residents.

Register in person at the Atlantic Recreation Center or call 904-310-3350 ext. 1.  Registration required before the first day of any session.
