The City of Fernandina Beach has an opening for a:


Title:                Firefighter/Paramedic/EMT                       

Department:    Fire/Rescue

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

Reports to:      Fire/Rescue Captain

Pay Grade:      131 ($11.54 – $18.17)


Minimum Qualifications

A.        Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED required. Must successfully complete all medical and fitness evaluation requirements as defined in the current addition of NFPA 1582, Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments. A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Ability to perform essential job tasks as outlined in NFPA 1582, current edition.


B.        Certifications:

Florida Firefighter certification as authorized by F.S.S. 633 required. 

Current Florida certification as a Paramedic required or EMT Certification

            Current American Heart Association ACLS Certification required.

Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS certification. 

Florida driver’s license required.

16-hour Emergency Vehicle Operations Course Certification required.


C.        Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Ability to perform essential job tasks as outlined in NFPA 1582, current edition.  Knowledge of street locations, geography, and types of construction in the City preferred.  Excellent communication skills required.  Ability to act effectively in stressful situations required.  Ability to perform strenuous physical activities during emergency, training, or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold, or smoke required.  Ability to drive fire apparatus safely under emergency conditions required.  Skill in the use and maintenance of firefighting equipment required.  Knowledge of firefighting and emergency medical treatment techniques, policies, procedures, and practices required.  Knowledge of various types of fire hazards of the City required.


D.        Residency Requirement

Must live within sixty (60) miles of Five Points intersection in Fernandina Beach.


General Description

Protect life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid, and fire prevention duties, at times under high levels of emotional and physical stress.  Frequent contact with public requiring courtesy, discretion, and sound judgment.  Work performed inside and outside in various weather conditions in and around potentially hazardous areas and conditions. 


Essential Functions

1.      Directs EMT/Firefighter at emergency scenes.  Is responsible for initiating triage, treatment, and transport of patient to appropriate facility.

2.      Administers, and directs Advanced Life Support (ALS) procedures according to medical control.

3.      Attends in-service classes for continuing education in field.

4.      Ensures all ALS equipment is properly stocked and maintained on the unit at all times.

5.      Ensures all paperwork and billing information is complete prior to leaving the hospital.

6.      Re-checks unit for cleanliness and operation prior to returning the unit to available status.

7.      Performs all work duties in addition to those outlined for Firefighter/EMT.

8.      Performs other duties as assigned.


Essential Physical Skills

Acceptable eyesight and hearing (with or without corrections); ability to communicate both orally and in writing; meet physical requirements as indicated for State Certification.  Must endure sustained acts of physical exhaustion and endure periods of duty under unfavorable and life threatening situations.  Driving heavy vehicles and equipment; heavy (45 pounds and over) lifting and carrying.  Reaching, pulling, pushing, balancing, throwing, climbing (including ladders), walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, jumping, running, and smelling.  Reasonable accommodations will be made for otherwise qualified individuals with a disability.


Environmental Conditions

Hazardous conditions: flames, fire, chemicals, smoke, heat, gases, moving vehicles, falling structures and debris, electricity, poor ventilation, poor lighting and related hazardous conditions.  Stressful situations; heights.
