Job Title: Ocean-Rescue Lifeguard Trainee

The City of Fernandina Beach has fifteen (15) openings for seasonal:


Title:                Ocean-Rescue Lifeguard Trainee

Department:    Fire

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

Reports to:      Deputy Fire Chief

Pay Grade:      124 ($11.49 – $18.10)




Education and Experience


1.      Must possess high school diploma or GED, or currently be a student. 

2.      Must be at least 16 years of age. 

3.      Must have completed 40 Hour Fernandina Beach Fire Rescue/Division of Ocean Rescue Recruit Academy.

4.      Candidate must complete pre-employment physical test consisting of the following:

a.       500 meter  swim in 10:00 or less

b.      Tread water  5:00 minutes

c.       Underwater swim 15 yards

d.      Dive and retrieve object from a  depth of 7-10 feet




1.      Candidates must possess a valid American Heart Association CPR (BLS) for healthcare provider’s card.

2.      Candidates must possess a valid American Heart Association first aid card.


Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills


1.      Must have knowledge of proper safety and health procedures and precautions.  Must possess the ability to swim strongly and handle frightened victims in water, and the ability to swim 500 meters over a measured course in ten minutes or less. 

2.      Effective oral communication skills required. 

3.      Must have above average physical endurance and possess adequate vision, hearing acuity, physical ability and stamina to perform the duties of an open water lifeguard.  Knowledge of public beach accesses preferred.


General Description


Responsible work ensuring the safety of swimmers by watching the ocean for swimmers in distress, dangerous currents, or marine life.  Perform rescues under the direct and immediate supervision of a beach lifeguard.

Essential Functions


1.         Attends in-service training for rescuers.

2.         Sits for extended periods in a stand, monitoring the ocean.

3.         Enforces beach rules and regulations.

4.         Works with other guards in ensuring the safety of swimmers.

5.         Performs first aid and CPR.

6.         Rescues victims.

7.         Assists the public in a courteous but firm manner.

8.         Maintains assigned equipment.

9.         Performs safety checks on equipment in use.

10.     Attends and participates in administrative meetings as required.

11.     Reads and interprets manuals to ensure safe and efficient operation of equipment.

12.     Complies with OSHA Safety and Health rules.

13.     Performs other duties as assigned.


Essential Physical Skills


Acceptable eyesight and hearing (with/without correction), sitting, walking, running, standing, kneeling, bending, climbing, swimming, heavy lifting and carrying (up to 100 lbs.).

Environmental Conditions

Works outside in various weather conditions with exposure to ultra-violet radiation.
