The City of Fernandina Beach has two regular part-time openings (hours vary from 0 – 29 hours per week) for a:


Title:                Water Safety Instructor

Department:    Parks & Recreation

FLSA Status:  Non-exempt

Reports to:      Aquatics/Greenway Supervisor

Pay grade:       119 ($9.00 – $14.18)


Minimum Qualifications

A.        Education and Experience:

Must have completed 10th grade and be at least 16 years of age.  A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.


B.        Certifications:

Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification, Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification or other nationally recognized certification (YMCA, National Safety Council or equivalent) required.  Current certification and experience in lifesaving, first aid, and CPR preferred.


C.        Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Must be able to demonstrate competency in the basic water safety skills, lifesaving skills, and/or swim strokes and knowledge of instructing techniques to accommodate all ages.  Excellent oral and written communication skills required.  Must have high level of interpersonal skills; customer service experience a plus.  Must be able to work flexible hours, including some weekends and holidays.


General Description

Responsible for participatory and supervisory work in organizing and teaching an effective lifeguard certification or swimming lesson program, to include water safety presentations and skills, and, if a certified swimming instructor, stroke training (introductory – advanced levels).  Ensures that a safe and healthy environment is provided during all teaching activities.  Provides direct supervision of personnel assigned to assist with teaching activities. 


Essential Functions

1.         Effectively organizes lesson plans, classroom and aquatic activities.

2.         Conducts a progressive training program.

3.         Evaluates students.

4.         Maintains and prepares reports and records and ensures that the certifying agency’s reporting standards are followed.

5.         Communicates effectively in writing and orally.

6.         Promotes public awareness of aquatics safety and benefits of organized instruction.

7.         Demonstrates competency in the water safety skills and swim strokes included in the courses taught.

8.         Demonstrates instruction techniques that accommodate all ages and abilities.

9.         Ensures a safe environment for all pool patrons, including water quality.

10.     Maintains good working relationships with customers, fellow employees, and other departments. 

11.     Exhibits professional conduct so as to promote the public’s confidence and respect.

12.     Responsible for special projects as assigned.

13.     Other duties as assigned.


Essential Physical Skills

Acceptable eyesight and hearing, moderate to heavy lifting (30 – 75 pounds), carrying, kneeling, pushing, pulling, walking, balancing, running, bending, stooping, standing, swimming.  Must have above average physical endurance.   Must be capable of sitting and/or jumping from an elevated platform (not to exceed 6 ft.).  Reasonable accommodations will be made for otherwise qualified individuals with a disability.


Environmental Conditions

Works inside an office and outside in various weather conditions, with exposure to ultra-violet radiation.
