Junior Lifeguard Programs

If you have a desire to become a lifeguard, either at a public swimming pool or a beach, why not get some early "field experience" with our summer Junior Lifeguard Programs? These are introductory programs that teach skills such as personal water safety, basic rescue techniques, ocean aquatic safety techniques, and others. Both the Introductory Jr. Lifeguard Exploration Program and Ocean Beach Jr. Lifeguard Program are administered through the Parks & Recreation Department (Fernandina Beach Ocean Rescue, a division of the Fernandina Beach Fire Department, is responsible for actual beach lifeguards on Nassau County beaches).  Both programs are offered during the summer only (May - August).

Introductory Junior Lifeguard Exploration Program (ages 9-13)
  • Introduction to personal water safety skills and basic rescue techniques
  • Exploration of lifeguarding in a variety of aquatic environments: pool; beach; water park; river
  • Pre-requisites: 1) Swim 25 yards (1 full pool length) continuously. 2) Tread water for 2 minutes.
  • Summer 2018 sessionsJune 18th - 22nd or July 23rd - 27th.  9:00am-4:00pm each day.  Meet at the Atlantic Recreation Center.

Ocean Beach Junior Lifeguard Program (ages 10-15)
  • Ocean aquatic safety techniques
  • CPR instruction
  • Beach ecology education
  • Emphasis on physical fitness and personal safety
  • Sun protection
  • Team building environment
  • Mentoring by Ocean Rescue professionals
  • Pre-requisites: 1) Swim 50 yards (2 pool lengths) using front crawl and/or breaststroke. 2) Swim 10 yards underwater. 3) Tread water for 3 minutes.
  • Summer 2018 sessionsJune 11th - 15th; June 25th - 29th; or July 9th - 13th.  9:00am-4:00pm each day.  Meet at the Atlantic Recreation Center to be transported to Main Beach.

Either program: $150 City residents; $187 Non-City
