Fiscal Year 2022/2023 Street Resurfacing
The Street Resurfacing project will begin March 14th and is expected to take 3-4 weeks to complete. This year's project will involve the milling & resurfacing of nearly 3.3 miles of City streets. Affected areas will receive a door tag approximately a week before the start of resurfacing in their area. The Facilities side of the Maintenance Department is responsible for maintaining City buildings. Functions include repair and maintenance. The Maintenance Department is also responsible for various special events throughout the City.
As part of its responsibility to maintain the condition and appearance of City properties, the following functions are performed:
- Street Lighting
- Preventative Maintenance & Inspections
The Fleet portion of the Maintenance Department is responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, and disposal of City vehicles and equipment. The City of Fernandina Beach has approximately 225 vehicles assigned to various departments throughout the City, and in 2009, was nationally recognized by Government Fleet Magazine, as one of the 100 Best Fleets in North America. A variety of tasks are performed in the city garage, such as:
- Vehicle Purchasing & Acquisition
- Maintenance & Repair
- Welding & Fabrication
- Parts Inventory Control
- Preventative Maintenance
- Vehicle Surplus & Disposal (auction site)
The Maintenance Department provides a variety of services to the general public including the maintenance of the City right-of-ways. Others tasks performed by this department include:
-Sidewalk repair and replacement
-Gravel and dirt road maintenance
-Tree canopy maintenance
-Commercial & subdivision site inspections for code and ADA compliance
-Traffic light and uniform traffic control
-Sign maintenance and installation

The City Commission approved Resolution 2021-30 authorizing the City of Fernandina Beach to assume responsibility of residential yard waste services. This transition officially took place on April 7, 2021.
Grapple trucks will be used to pick up residential yard waste (5 cu. yards max). Citizens who bag their waste must use biodegradable bags. Biodegradable bags can be purchased at local hardware stores. Waste should be piled and placed at the edge of yards for the grapple truck to pick up. Do not mix yard debris with trash! Please also be cognizant of storm drains and other obstructions (hydrants, electrical boxes, low limbs, etc.).
